When should you change the water filter cartridges?

This is a question we frequently get. I have also met people who have kept the cartridges the same for over 3-4 years but continue to consume water from the filter. The periodic change of the cartridges is significant for permanently having clean and healthy water.

Filter cartridges are practically the most essential part of a water filter. Depending on your filter model, these cartridges are changed more often or less often. The most important aspects are the water quality and the filter cartridges’ size.

RO Service in Patna recommends replacing the cartridges after a specific volume of water is consumed or after a period, whichever occurs faster.

The information in this article is universally valid for most filtration systems. On average, the maximum filtration capacity of the cartridges is 4000 liters, and the duration is 6-9 months. The manufacturers calculate this quantity and lifetime for incoming water of average quality. If its quality is terrible, the numbers decrease considerably.

In most cases, a family of 3-4 people only consumes 4000 liters of water during the lifetime of the cartridges. In this case, you don’t have to worry about how much water you’ve consumed, but remind yourself when the period has passed since you last changed these cartridges.

Depending on the water quality, specific cartridges are sometimes replaced more quickly. Thus, the most common problems in water are the following:

1. Sand, rust, earth, etc.

If your water is visibly dirty, you must replace the first cartridge of the system more often (3-6 months). This is the most exposed and absorbs dirt quickly. If you have a transparent case, you can see the degree of charge and the color of the cartridge. When it has turned dark brown, it must be replaced. However, remember that most cartridges filter from the outside to the inside. This means that if it is slightly dirty outside, the inside is ok and can still be kept.

2. Very high hardness

If you have white marks on your sanitary items, glasses, or crockery, your water has a high concentration of calcium and magnesium (hard water). This means you must replace the softening cartridge every 3-6 months.

3. Excess chlorine

If the unfiltered water is whitish and contains a lot of chlorine, all cartridges containing activated carbon must be replaced more quickly. Charcoal is an excellent absorbent with a maximum absorption capacity and must be replaced every 3-6 months.

4. Strange smell or taste

If the water has a strange taste or smell before filtering, all the cartridges must be replaced when this taste/smell also appears in the filtered water. This means that these cartridges no longer have the absorption capacity.

5. Bacteria in the water

Although bacteria should not be in the water, sometimes, because of the ancient network, they do exist. Your filter must have a particular dirt cartridge. This cartridge must be replaced when green formations (such as sludge) are observed. An ultrafiltration cartridge, reverse osmosis, or sterilization with a UV lamp can remove the bacteria in the water.

Regardless of the type of water you have, to always have good water, I recommend checking the condition of the cartridges every 2-3 months. You have to open the first case and see the condition of the cartridge. In addition, the best sign that the cartridges need to be replaced is the filtered water’s changed taste/smell. If it has become visible and disturbing, I recommend that you at least replace the prefilters (usually 1,2,3).

RO Service Jabalpur recommends that everyone buy only filter systems with standard-size cartridges in their components. This will lower the cost of consumables.
