The upper tier of kitchen units are tall cabinets, display cases, bedside tables, and corner ends. They must not only be assembled correctly but also hung correctly so that they do not fall on the owner’s head under their weight. The masters of the “J & J Contracting LLC” told us how to hang cabinets in the kitchen, taking into account the wall material and the type of fasteners. Step-by-step detailed instructions await you, which, we are sure, even a beginner will understand.
General rules
Even before buying a kitchen set, you probably already planned where to hang the kitchen cabinets. Let’s recall the basic rules:
- The height from the floor to the top shelf of the wall cabinet is selected based on height. It should be such that the hostess and other family members have free access to the contents.
- The upper modules must not cover the ventilation openings.
- It is necessary to maintain the correct interval from the tabletop to the cabinet. According to GOST, the minimum height is 45 cm. But a distance of 45 to 60 cm is considered convenient.
Fasteners are selected taking into account heavy loads and the type of walls.
Preparing the walls
Usually, modules are installed after repairs and finishing. But if the wall is crooked, it will have to be leveled before installing the cabinets.
Basic alignment methods:
- Puttying;
- Leveling with plasterboard sheets.
In the eternal question: of what should come first: installing cabinets or mounting an apron, the experts at Mebel Shara are unanimous. First, the apron is made, then the upper and lower modules are mounted. Before starting work, use a level and a simple pencil to make markings on the wall. The markings will allow you to hang the kitchen cabinets evenly and neatly.
Selecting a mount
Furniture from the store is supplied without mounting hardware. The hardware is selected before hanging the cabinets. Let’s look at popular options.
The “ear” or “loop” hanger is a metal plate with a slot for fastening. One side is screwed to the back or side wall of the module, the other is hung on the head of a screw screwed into the wall. The loop is the cheapest and easiest way to fasten. But it is not designed for heavy loads.
Hanging corners are the same hinges, only bent at 90 degrees. They can be attached to horizontal surfaces through slots. They are more reliable than a regular hinge, the suspension is adjustable if necessary.
The mounting strip consists of a metal strip and a canopy on a plastic body with a hook for fastening to the rail. The strip can be up to 3 m long. It is attached to the wall with dowels or screws along the horizontal marking. This method of fastening allows for the adjustment of the hooks. When mounted on the strip, the wall cabinets are positioned close to each other, the gaps are minimal.
How to hang kitchen cabinets on hinges or corners?
When installing the upper level of modules, hinges, and corners are screwed to the cabinets in the same way.
Algorithm:
- Attach the fittings to the back wall of the module, mark the entry point of the screws or self-tapping screws with a simple pencil, and screw on the hinges.
- Measure the distance between the hinges. Make marks on the wall to hang the cabinet later.
- For light blocks, prepare hooks with a diameter of about 5 mm. For heavy modules, use anchors of 6-10 mm. A hole is drilled, and an anchor is inserted. After hanging the module, the anchor is tightened tightly to the wall.
How to hang kitchen cabinets on a mounting rail?
Before hanging kitchen cabinets on the rail, you need to be prepared for the fact that it will “organize” a gap of a couple of millimeters between the wall and the module. You will need an additional bar at the bottom to align the position of the cabinet.
Work algorithm:
- We make markings on the wall. The bar should be located 3-4 cm below the upper border of the cabinet. Remember that the hostess should be able to comfortably reach any shelf, so consider at what height to hang kitchen cabinets in your case.
- We mount adjustable awnings on the inner side of the module. In doing so, we step back from the edge by 5 mm. We make slots in the back wall for the bracket for fastening to the bar.
- We drill holes in the wall for fastening. For a brick wall, the gap between fasteners should be 3.5-4 cm, for a foam block, 15 cm is enough. If the wall was previously leveled with plasterboard, the optimal distance between the holes will be 10 cm.
- We divide the rail into the required lengths. The standard length in the store is 2 m. But along the entire length, it has notches for breaking. We fix the rail. The bar is screwed with self-tapping screws under plastic dowels or fixed with anchors.
- We install the modules. We hook the bracket hooks onto the edges of the mounting rail. Now the modules can be moved along the bar, like a train on rails. That’s what we’ll do – we’ll fit the blocks tightly together so that there are no gaps.
Interesting! Hanging brackets can be adjusted up and down and closer to and further from the wall. If you need to adjust the height of the cabinets or closer to the wall, adjust the position of the module using the hanging bracket.
How to hang kitchen cabinets on drywall or foam block?
An empty plasterboard wall will not support the weight of the kitchen unit. You need to attach the strip to the metal frame of the plasterboard wall or fasten it with studs to the main wall if there is one under the plasterboard layer.
Long screws are needed to attach the lath to the foam block. Special anchors are offered in construction stores for cellular concrete.
It is not difficult to assemble cabinets yourself. But it is better to take an assistant to hand you tools, hold the modules, and watch with you whether the furniture is installed evenly. You will see, you will succeed!
