Do you want to know about embryology career? What are the requirements of becoming an embryologist? Is IVF field really flourishing now?

Yes. In IVF field, you can have a bright future.

What is the eligibility?

Let’s get to know. Till 2022, anyone could become an embryologist… there was no embryology course eligibility, but in 2022, the government declares a law, not a guideline. A hard rule. And it is very strict.

What is the rule? What does the rule say about embryologists?

The rule says that at least embryologists should do – MSc in Clinical Embryology, MSc in Life Science or get a doctorate in Embryology. If this is the case, then you are eligible for the role of an embryologist. But you need at least 3 years of experience to work as an embryologist.

3 years of experience – How do you start?

After 12th, take admission for Clinical Embryology. So that MSc in Clinical Embryology. In Clinical Embryology, many things are taught first – Training, fellowship, etc. So, after MSc in Clinical Embryology. You get a vacancy as a lab technician, as a junior embryologist.

Yes, but obviously there should be a vacancy for that course. As per concern, the more the number of centres, the more the number of vacancies. And that is a fact. But yes, maybe there is a salary. I don’t think there is just a salary. Because the more the number of centres, the more the number of embryologists. And the less the demand for embryology. There is a lot of demand for embryologists. That is good embryologists.

So, this is a simple option for you. Bachelor, Master in Clinical Embryology. The second option is those who have done Life Science. Specifically those who have done Biotechnology. Those who have done Microbiology. Those who have done Genetics.

So, these people have a scope. But they should train under some senior. They should get training. They should complete their Fellowship in Clinical Embryology. They should have some experience. Then and then only, any other centre will allow you to enter in their lab.

There are many such centres that take freshers. Provide one year training. And then only, as a junior embryologist, as a senior embryologist, as a chief embryologist, they enrol them. So, this can be your subject. But yes, major factor is there. And that is Patience.

You can stay on the same post for 2 years. You can stay on the same post for 3 years. Let’s know that too. You must be watching online. Many people are saying that take general training. You become an embryologist. You will be an embryologist within 6 months. There are some institutes also. They are offering only a week of training programme. And they claim, yes you will be able to handle all these techniques. No.

A formal training in embryology is necessary. Medline Academics is one such institution offering embryology courses in Bangalore. For practicing embryologists, or students looking for upskilling their knowledge, this institution provides short-term, long-term and other certification courses in embryology and reproductive medicine. After completing BSc and MSc. Join a good centre where you will see, there is an opportunity. If not, then go for well-reputed fellowship programme in embryology.

And then get into this field. Consider at least 3 years in your mind. 3 years of your struggle. After 3 years, maybe you will earn too much money. But, yes. 3 years of patience.

Very briefly. First of all, you have to know. Theory.

Second, semen analysis.

Third, you have to know – Ovum pickup scanning.

  • Then, there is denudation. Then, there is ICSI. Then, there is sample washing.
  • Then, there is embryo assessment.
  • Then, there is embryo freezing.
  • Then, there is embryo thawing.
  • And, last, there is embryo transfer.
  • And, the main thing is. Documentation.

A law was introduced in India in 2022, since 2022, government has given a strict criterion for embryologists. So, what is the eligibility to become an embryologist? So, first thing is that as per government law, you should graduate in life science, you should graduate from biotech, reproductive biology, veterinary science with 3 years of minimum experience in relevant field or you should complete your post-graduation in life science, biotechnology, veterinary science and then in reproductive biology and then you can apply for junior embryologist.

Most of the hospitals prefer students who already have some of the experience in IVF. So, it is recommended that before applying a job, take a 3 – 6 months fellowship course from any reputed institute, whatever you want, so it is a hands-on practise should be there, so after completion of that short term 3 – 6-month course, then you can apply for a junior embryologist course.

If you have already completed graduation and master in clinical embryology, then you don’t have to do any further additional course except for obtaining a Fellowship in Embryology, because in clinical embryology already a student learns the many things like how to handle the eggs, how to handle the gametes etc., so after completion of 12th, choose BSc in clinical embryology, after that master in clinical embryology / Fellowship programs and then you can directly apply for junior embryologist. Those students who already completed master, bachelor in life science, for that student take the IVF for 3 to 6 months hands on course, after that you can also apply the post of junior embryologist.
